When to Consider Mole Removal

If your mole isn’t changing, bleeding, itching or causing you any discomfort, there generally is not a medical reason to have it removed. However, many men and women choose to have their moles taken off for cosmetic purposes.

What Does a Normal Mole Look Like?

A normal, common mole is dark and uniform in color. It may be slightly raised above the skin. An atypical mole is called “dysplastic nevi.” These growths may be larger than common moles and feature irregular borders and different colors. They are considered precancerous and have a higher chance of becoming melanoma.

Red Flags How to Spot a Risky Mole

Though most moles are harmless, some may develop into cancer. If your moles exhibit any of the following warning signs, you should have them examined by a professional right away:

  • Itches or bleeds
  • Has multiple colors
  • Larger than 6 millimeters
  • Rapid changes in color, size, and shape
  • In a location where it can’t be easily monitored, such as on the scalp

If you have a mole that may be cancerous or atypical, we will take a small tissue sample for examination. Depending on the results, he may recommend its removal.

Your Mole Removal Options

Mole removal is generally not a painful experience for our patients, though it may be a little uncomfortable. Prior to the procedure, we will apply a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort.

Cut

Many moles can be shaved off until they are flush with the surface of your skin. However, if there is a chance that the mole will grow back, you may require a deeper cut and stitches.

Freeze

In some cases, a mole can be frozen off using a very small amount of liquid nitrogen. This option may cause a blister to form in the treatment area, but it will fall off eventually.

Laser

Laser mole removal is most effective on small, flat, dark-colored moles. This procedure may not remove the entire mole at once, and as such, you may require multiple treatments.

Will My Mole Removal Leave a Scar?

Most of our mole removal procedures do not leave a scar or mark. Once the mole is removed, there should be no indication that it was ever present.
