Quick quiz: Is a breast reduction right for you?
- Are your breasts too large for your body?
- Does your chest limit your ability to exercise?
- Do you regularly experience back and neck pain?
- Do your bra straps leave indentations in your shoulders?
- Is irritation present along your breast crease?
If you answered “yes” to most of the questions above, there is a good chance that you will benefit from a breast reduction.
Your breast reduction options
The traditional breast reduction technique is the most common. It’s ideal for women with very large breasts and involves an incision around the nipple, down the breast and along the breast crease. Through that extensive opening, Dr. Berkowitz can remove a substantial amount of breast tissue.
The vertical technique involves an incision around the areola and down the front of the breast, creating a “lollipop” shape. It’s associated with less scarring than the traditional approach, along with a shorter recovery period. It’s best for women who want to remove a moderate amount of volume.
Scarless breast reduction is done via gentle liposuction, through a small incision hidden in the armpit.
This approach is ideal for women with breasts composed primarily of fatty tissue – rather than glandular development.
The breast lift procedure
Step One: Anesthesia
Our anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia to ensure your complete comfort and safety during surgery.
Step Three: The reduction
Through your incision openings, Dr. Berkowitz will remove excess fat, tissue and skin from the lower breast area.
Step Two: Incisions
Depending on the specifics discussed during your initial consultation, Dr. Berkowitz will either make an anchor, a vertical or a scarless incision. Any cuts he creates will be strategically placed so that they are virtually imperceptible once you have healed.
Step Four: Nipple repositioning
Once he has sculpted smaller, firmer and more youthful breasts, Dr. Berkowitz will reposition the nipple so it’s in a more natural location on your new, smaller chest.

The recovery: What to expect
Immediately after your procedure, Dr. Berkowitz will wrap your chest in a compression garment to promote healing and protect the area. You will remain in the recovery room for a period of time so that we can closely monitor your progress.
Shortly after surgery, you will be free to return home and begin the healing process. Over the next few weeks, you can expect:
- Some pain that should be manageable with medication
- Redness, swelling and bruising that will disappear gradually
- Temporary changes in nipple sensation
