8 Things That Are Ruining Your Skin
Posted August 20, 2010 10:17 AM in Skin Rejuvenation
Aging is inevitable, but there are some things you can do slow down the process! Here are some 8 things to avoid, as well as ways you can improve your skin for a healthier, younger look.
1. Sun Damage — Sun exposure is still the biggest single cause of damage to the skin. People often don't realize that sun exposure while walking the street or driving in your car is significant. The rule is that you must apply sunscreen every day and you should reapply every two hours, because it does wear off. SPF 30 is best. There is a sunscreen for everyone. If your skin is dry, you can use a moisturizing sunscreen. If it is oily, use a gel.
2. Stress — When your body is under stress, it releases neuropeptides. They can make skin conditions such as acne, eczema or psoriosis worse. Stress also causes adrenaline to be released, which causes blood vessels to contract, thereby depriving the skin of oxygen and nutrients. Find a stress-relieving activity that is right for you. It may be yoga, exercise or meditation.
3. Lack of Sleep — You really need seven to eight hours of sleep, but that is hard for many people. If you get six, try to add another 30 minutes. Lack of sleep and stress can have profound effects on the skin such as causing skin cells to reproduce abnormally. 30 extra minutes of sleep can make a big difference.
4. Dehydration — Things like drinking alcohol, using drying soaps, or even washing your face with too much hot water can dehydrate skin. Dehydration ruins skin, so you must moisturize. Moisturizers with ceramides are great because they held the skin to hold onto water. You should apply moisturizer a couple of times a day if your skin is dehydrated. If you are prone to breakouts, look for moisturizers that are noncomedegenic.
5. Overusing Lip Balm — Overusing lip balm can make your lips drier depending on the ingredients. Many dyes can irritate the skin and produce extra dryness. Look for a balm that just has petroleum, or even use plain Vasoline. Apply several times a day and your lips will improve.
6. Tanning — The only safe tan comes from a bottle. The good news is that self-tanners have come a long way. There are many terrific ones now. Some ways to improve application are to shave areas like legs beforehand, and always exfoliate the skin first. Use a loofah sponge or even an exfoliating lotion before applying the self-tanner so that it goes on smoothly and evenly.
7. Overusing skin care products — People with skin problems tend to overuse products. This leads to redness and irritation. The rule is to select one produce and use it for six to eight weeks. That is how long it takes to see improvement. Also, do not combine benzyl peroxide produces with salicylic acid products.
8. Tobacco — Stop smoking! Tobacco is terrible for your skin. Smoke release free radicals which damages the collagen and elastin in the skin. You can't reverse all the damage, but some if it can.

Hollywood's New View on Plastic Surgery?
Posted April 30, 2010 10:57 AM in Anti Aging Treatment
Yesterday, the Today Show featured a story about a movement in Hollywood towards natural beauty.
Producers and casting directors are making it clear that they don't
want fake looking actresses, but rather prefer a less 'cookie cutter'
aesthetic. Some are even branching out to hiring actresses from outside
of Los Angeles, and even outside of the US as they search for a
distinctive face.
The
casting directors interviewed for the segment were quick to point out
though that it's okay if you have cosmetic surgery, they just shouldn't
be able to tell. The key is that your features must look real, not necessarily be
real. The casting directors and executives are quick to point out that
they still want the "cream of the crop" so to speak when it comes to
beauty. Hollywood hasn't changed their ideal - they're saying you should
come by it naturally.
A recent study conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic
Surgery (ASDS) confirms that women prefer a gradual effect over a
sudden change. 89% said they would rather have gradual results that
could last as long as two years over immediate results lasting six
months.
Natural-looking beauty has ALWAYS been our goal here at Accents Cosmetic Surgery. We want people to ask you if you've just come back from vacation, not if you just came back from the surgeon's office! We use a wide variety of non-invasive techniques. Some procedures, such as Thermage skin tightening, start to increase collagen production over time, so optimal results aren't seen until 3 to 6 months later.
The most important thing is for patients to let us know what they want to achieve, and we can work with them to find the best solution that will leave them with a more youthful — but still natural — beauty.

Put an End to Unwanted Hair For Good!
Posted March 02, 2010 12:17 PM

While there may still be snow on ground here in Michigan, Spring is just around the corner! If you are interested in finally becoming stubble-free this summer, now is the time to start the process of laser hair removal!
If you are ready to be done with shaving, tweezing, waxing and wonder creams and all the bumps, rashes and discomfort that come with these procedures, laser hair removal may be right for you. At Accents, we use the Syneron DSL laser which uses laser and radio frequency technology to disable hair follicles from growing hair. Since hair grows in cycles, some hair follicles will be in their dormant stage during your initial treatment. Gradually, over several treatments, there is a permanent reduction in the amount of hair in that area. Our laser has the added advantage of treating large areas very quickly!
Each treatment will result in less hair coming back, as well as
hair growing progressively lighter in color, finer, and slower-growing
with each treatment. It takes more than 1 treatment to affect all the
follicles growing in an area. Most people achieve satisfactory
clearance after 6-8 treatments, but individual results vary depending
on medical and genetic factors. (Lighter colored hair may require more
treatments than darker colored hair.)
Treatments are spaced about a month apart, making March the perfect time to begin laser hair removal so that you can be silky smooth this summer!
MARCH PROMOTION: All laser hair removal treatments are "Buy One Area, Get One Area FREE" during March! Take advantage of this great special offer and throw away those razors for good!

Does this city make my butt look big?

Thinking about a nose job? Chances are you’re
from the Northeast, according to new data released from RealSelf.com, a
consumer review site for the cosmetic industry. Permanent makeup more
your thing? Then you’re probably from the Southwest.
“We
looked at our logs — we’re talking millions of searches — in order to
map [regional] consumer interest,” says Tom Seery, president and
founder of RealSelf.com “There were definitely some interesting findings.”
For instance, the Web site’s search data tracked 55 percent more
searches for rhinoplasty by people in the Northeast than in other area
of the country. And Southerners (people who live in Florida, South
Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi and other nearby states) were 30
percent more likely to search for traditional facelifts and related
procedures than in other areas.
