Eyelid Surgery

The eyes are a central part of who you are to the world. They convey both an age and a demeanor to the world around us. Unfortunately, over time and with the natural changes brought about by aging, the message our eyes send to the world no longer matches how we feel within. We look older. We look angry, upset, or disinterested. The muscles in this delicate area relax over time, causing heavy bags and an older, worn, and weathered tired appearance. Eyelid surgery in Detroit, Michigan with Dr. Mark Berkowitz can improve these obvious cosmetic signs of aging and restore to you a bright, inviting, and more youthful expression.

Are you ready to have your eyes done?

“I was experiencing vision problems due to my droopy eyelids. My eyes were always tired from having to work the muscles to keep my eyes open. I was tired of the comments from others saying how tired I always looked.”

For many of our Detroit patients, they decide it’s time for eyelid surgery when their vision is impaired due to heavy bags. For others, it’s when the lines, wrinkles and sagging skin make them look years older than they feel.

A majority of our clients that choose to receive Blepharoplasty in our Detroit office tend to be 35 years or older. However, if droopiness and heavy bags run in your family, you may need the procedure earlier in life.

Your eyelid surgery options in Detroit

Laser

  • Rejuvenate the upper + lower eyelids
  • Improve droopy, tired-looking eyes
  • Uses a laser rather than a scalpel
  • Less scarring, bleeding and recovery time

Laser blepharoplasty can be done under local, topical or oral sedation, which reduces the risks associated with anesthesia. Unlike the traditional approach to this procedure, this option is performed with a CO2 laser. The laser seals the blood vessels during surgery, so the patient experiences less bruising and swelling. This approach also allows Dr. Berkowitz to make very precise changes because there is less swelling and trauma to the area overall.

Traditional

  • Remove fat + skin from the upper + lower eyelids
  • Tighten the underlying muscles
  • Involves small incisions hidden in the natural creases of your eyes

With traditional eyelid surgery, Dr. Berkowitz will begin by administering general anesthesia to ensure your safety. He will then create an incision in your upper and lower eyelids, hiding the cuts in plain sight within the natural folds of your skin. From there, he will remove excess fat and tissue and reposition the underlying muscles. Once your youthful expression has been restored, he will close the incisions to minimize any scarring.

Which option is right for you?

Both the laser and scalpel are capable of rejuvenating your eyes. And, when performed by the right plastic surgeon, both approaches can yield beautiful results. The primary difference is the recovery period. Because the traditional technique results in more downtime, swelling and bruising, many of our Detroit eye surgery patients are opting for laser blepharoplasty.

The recovery: What to expect after eyelid surgery

  • The total recovery period will take several weeks
  • Most of our Detroit patients are able to return to work within three to ten days
  • Immediately after surgery, some redness and irritation is normal and to be expected
  • Any swelling, discoloration and side effects will be minimized as you progress through the healing process
  • Apply cold compresses and keep your head elevated to reduce swelling
  • Avoid vigorous activities and anything that will increase blood flow to the eyes, such as crying or bending over

Eyelid Surgery FAQs

Can I drive myself home after getting eyelid surgery?

No. You should have a friend or family member on call to drive you home after eyelid surgery. Whether you have surgery on the upper or lower eyelids or both, and whether that surgery is done under general or local anesthesia, you should not drive yourself home after surgery.

After some lighter eyelid surgeries, such as an upper eyelid blepharoplasty under local anesthesia, you may feel up to driving, however, we strongly caution against it. It’s safest to have a friend or family member drive you home.

Will getting eyelid surgery cause dry eyes to get worse?

If eyelid surgery is greatly overdone, a dry eye condition could be exacerbated. Dr. Berkowitz has yet to experience such a result and carefully assesses every patient to ensure optimal outcomes. Any feeling of dryness in the eyes should be short-lived and should resolve with eye drops.

When can I return to normal activities after getting eyelid surgery?

Within 3 to 4 days of your surgery, you should be able to gradually start returning to normal activities. You should take this slowly, and not overdo it or do something you don’t feel comfortable with, but generally speaking, within 3 to 4 days you should be able to return to many normal activities, and within 7 days could be back at work.

For the first time in my life (that I can remember), I have eyelids! I have received such positive feedback from family and friends at how my eyes now stand out – how smooth my face looks – how much younger I look…. The recovery period was incredible in the fact of how painless and quick it was.
