A Rundown on Cosmetic Procedures for Men in Michigan
What Do We Mean by Just For Men?
Sometimes it can take us a while to get over a stereotype. For a long time, the stereotype was that men didn’t get cosmetic surgery. Historical evidence and new trends are combining to prove this stereotype patently false. And it’s in that spirit that we’d like to take a few paragraphs and highlight the many options available for men at Accents Cosmetic Surgery, if only because these options can greatly improve quality of life for patients but sometimes get overlooked.
At Accents, we might call a procedure “for men” based on a few different standards we might apply. First, the procedure may have been developed specifically for men. With something like a NeoGraft® Hair Restoration treatment, there might be applications for women who have thinning hair, but the procedure itself was developed primarily to serve a male audience. We may also refer to a procedure as “for men” if has an associated technique that honors the basic masculine characteristics many men are aiming to achieve. CoolSculpting for gynecomastia falls into this category, for example, because CoolSculpting was developed mainly to target areas of fat around the belly—but the procedure has a technique associated with it that offers men the chance to achieve a more masculine chest.
These procedures run from invasive to completely non-surgical, depending on the both the disposition of the patient and the best way to accomplish the desired final looks. Some of these “for men” procedures include the following:
NeoGraft® Hair Replacement
NeoGraft® is easily one of the most popular male-specific procedures at Accents Cosmetic Surgery. During a traditional hair rejuvenation procedure, there might be intense scarring along the hairline. In essence, during these procedures, entire sections of the scalp (those sections still growing hair) would be transplanted—follicles and all—to an area of the head where hair growth is more desirable. These rather intense hair replacement surgeries required significant time for recovery and significant patience before results could be expected.
When it was introduced, NeoGraft® essentially changed all that. By using a series of incisions measuring less than 1mm in length, NeoGraft® Hair Replacement therapy is able to transplant living, healthy hair follicles into your scalp with only minimal invasiveness. This procedure has a few big advantages over traditional hair replacement surgery. First, NeoGraft® does not produce scars. Second, NeoGraft® recovery is relatively swift, and you can be out in public in a matter of days. Indeed, the procedure itself usually requires only local anesthetic and can be performed in our offices at Accents Cosmetic Surgery. The third big advantage that NeoGraft® presents is just how quickly results can begin to show. In only a few days to a few weeks, you’ll be loving your new head of hair.

Eyelid Surgery for Men
As we age, our skin tends to become lax and lose some of its elasticity. This change in the skin, combined with natural weathering and exposure to the elements, is one of the primary causes of wrinkles (your muscles have something to do with it, too, but that’s what Botox is for). Wrinkles can add character to a face, and are generally more social acceptable on men than on women; however, one area of the face that is particularly unforgiving is around the eyes, in particular the eyelids. Excess skin and tissue around the eyelids can make your face look older than it is—it can make your expression look angry or sad even when you’re happy. Perhaps more than any other component of facial aging, the eyelids can make you look older and grumpier than you feel. Excessive eyelid tissue can also interfere with your ability to see, creating an obstruction that is impossible to clear without surgery.
Dr. Berkowitz, as a highly regarded oculofacial plastic surgeon, is an expert at correcting eyelids to make your vision better and your reflection more in tune with how you feel. By using a specially designed laser blepharoplasty procedure, Dr. Berkowitz is able to eliminate excess skin more safely and more quickly than was possible using traditional means. Rather than using a scalpel to cut away excess tissue, the laser blepharoplasty technique removes tissue without bleeding or scarring, and greatly reduces resulting bruising.
Eyelid surgery is a way of bringing out the youthfulness in your eyes—and we know that might sound a little feminine, but there’s no getting around how satisfied our male patients have been with the procedure. It helps that Dr. Berkowitz knows how to emphasize the masculine qualities of your eyelid structure, giving you better vision and a more masculine look in the mirror as well.

CoolSculpting for Gynecomastia
Breasts are one of those areas that are typically seen as feminine. So, many men who develop breasts—or male breasts, as they’re more often called—it can be embarrassing and disconcerting. Traditionally, the remedy for this condition, called gynecomastia, is surgery. And during that surgery, a plastic surgeon would go in and remove the excess tissue, be it muscle or fatty tissue. However, surgery can be a big investment and there is usually an extended recovery time with an inherently invasive procedure.
CoolSculpting was originally designed as a body sculpting device. By using a combination of cold and suction, Fat Freeze (as it is sometimes called) can eliminate unwanted fat by freezing it through the skin. The skin remains unharmed, and most patients see a noticeable change in the following six months or so. It’s a great solution for patients who do not want to undergo liposuction but who want to eliminate some unwanted pockets of fat for a leaner, cleaner look.
Because of its success treating various areas of the body, cosmetic surgeons have recently taken to using the CoolSculpting device to treat gynecomastia, and it has proven to be a largely successful undertaking. This is especially true when the tissue comprising the male breast is composed mostly of fat, which CoolSculpting specifically targets. By eliminating the fatty tissues, CoolSculpting for gynecomastia can help give men a more masculine profile—and with it, increased confidence, self esteem, and peace of mind.

Botox… Or, Do We Mean Bro-Tox?
When it comes to cosmetic procedures for men, there aren’t many that can compete with Botox. For a myriad of reasons, Botox has become incredibly popular over the years, and has become the wrinkle treatment of choice for most men (hence the perhaps overly-cute nickname which everyone barely puts up with). As we mentioned earlier, many wrinkles come from loss of elasticity in the skin. But wrinkles can also be caused by your muscles when they get locked into a “tensed” position. This most often happens in the lines above the eyes, the crow’s feet around the eyes, and your smile lines by your mouth.
Botox works by paralyzing certainly muscles in the face. Dr. Berkowitz will target those muscles responsible for the wrinkles giving you the most discomfort. The Botox should begin to work immediately, and although there might be some initial redness, there’s no down time or recovery associated with injections. Your results will last for three to four months, so if you like what you see afterward, you’ll have to get more injections at regular intervals.

Cosmetic Procedures for Men
These procedures for men have come a long way in the past couple of decades. While cosmetic surgery in general is still dominated by a largely female audience, a growing male presence is leading to some exciting innovation that honors and emphasizes the masculine forms of the male body. From surgical to nonsurgical techniques, men today have a wide variety of procedures to choose from, all of which are geared towards giving them the end look they want.
And we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge that, now more than ever, men are under intense pressure to protect their youth (that this is true to a larger extent to women perhaps helps explain the disparity in the male and female audience for cosmetic procedure… but that’s another blog). Ultimately, most people want to look as young as possible for as long as possible, and while cosmetic surgery is no fountain of youth, it does an excellent job of protecting many youthful appearances and aspects.
Accents Cosmetic Surgery is dedicated to granting all of its patients a safe environment in which these youthful appearances can be pursued and achieved. With years of experience and unmatched expertise, Accents is the logical place to pursue your new look, whatever that may be. Whether its Botox to ease off some of those wrinkles for another four months, or CoolSculpting for Gynecomastia so you can finally take your shirt off in the summer, Accents is the place where you can get what you need.
