A new soft tissue filler, Prevelle Silk, is now available for the correction of nasolabial folds and other severe wrinkles. This filler is a gel based on hyaluronic acid and has been approved by the FDA as of March 2008.

Prevelle Silk is a painless injection because lidocaine is included in its formulation. Similar products based on hyaluronic acid, such as Perlane®, JUVÉDERM® XC, Hydrelle™ and Restylane®, also feature this new approach to painless filler injections. During treatment, the lidocaine anesthetizes the injection area immediately without reducing the effectiveness of the procedure.

The length of time required for Prevelle Silk treatment depends on the number of injections you require, but it is usually about 30 minutes. Facial fold depth and the number of areas requiring treatment determine the number of injections required. Occasionally doctors offer a combination of Prevelle Silk and BOTOX® or other injectable fillers as a “liquid facelift.” Choosing this or other options may extend the time required for treatment.

Side effects are minimal, and improvements are visible right away, lasting 3-4 months. Because other soft tissue fillers last longer, some doctors recommend that new filler users try Prevelle Silk first so they can determine whether they prefer it. Users who like Prevelle Silk can then continue to receive it, but some may choose to go with a longer-acting filler for future treatments.
