Aging is inevitable, but there are some things you can do slow down the process! Here are some 8 things to avoid, as well as ways you can improve your skin for a healthier, younger look.

  1. Sun Damage — Sun exposure is still the biggest single cause of damage to the skin. People often don't realize that sun exposure while walking the street or driving in your car is significant. The rule is that you must apply sunscreen every day and you should reapply every two hours, because it does wear off. SPF 30 is best. There is a sunscreen for everyone. If your skin is dry, you can use a moisturizing sunscreen. If it is oily, use a gel.
  2. Stress — When your body is under stress, it releases neuropeptides. They can make skin conditions such as acne, eczema or psoriosis worse. Stress also causes adrenaline to be released, which causes blood vessels to contract, thereby depriving the skin of oxygen and nutrients. Find a stress-relieving activity that is right for you. It may be yoga, exercise or meditation.
  3. Lack of Sleep — You really need seven to eight hours of sleep, but that is hard for many people. If you get six, try to add another 30 minutes. Lack of sleep and stress can have profound effects on the skin such as causing skin cells to reproduce abnormally. 30 extra minutes of sleep can make a big difference.
  4. Dehydration — Things like drinking alcohol, using drying soaps, or even washing your face with too much hot water can dehydrate skin. Dehydration ruins skin, so you must moisturize. Moisturizers with ceramides are great because they held the skin to hold onto water. You should apply moisturizer a couple of times a day if your skin is dehydrated. If you are prone to breakouts, look for moisturizers that are noncomedegenic.
  5. Overusing Lip Balm — Overusing lip balm can make your lips drier depending on the ingredients. Many dyes can irritate the skin and produce extra dryness. Look for a balm that just has petroleum, or even use plain Vasoline. Apply several times a day and your lips will improve.
  6. Tanning — The only safe tan comes from a bottle. The good news is that self-tanners have come a long way. There are many terrific ones now. Some ways to improve application are to shave areas like legs beforehand, and always exfoliate the skin first. Use a loofah sponge or even an exfoliating lotion before applying the self-tanner so that it goes on smoothly and evenly.
  7. Overusing skin care products — People with skin problems tend to overuse products. This leads to redness and irritation. The rule is to select one produce and use it for six to eight weeks. That is how long it takes to see improvement. Also, do not combine benzyl peroxide produces with salicylic acid products.
  8. Tobacco — Stop smoking! Tobacco is terrible for your skin. Smoke release free radicals which damages the collagen and elastin in the skin. You can't reverse all the damage, but some if it can.

Allure magazine recently published a study on the effects of the sun, smoking and stress on the skin of twins.  It details how contrasting behaviors of the twins cause differences in appearance that eventually make one of the pair look older than the other. All of us — twins or not — may have more influence on the way we age than we think.

I am honored that the Chief Ophthalmologist, Guiquio Zhao, MD from Tsing Tsao Hospital in China, traveled to observe my surgical techniques. This was the first time this international ophthalmologist ever witnessed skin rejuvenation using the Mixto and ultrpulse Co2 lasers.  She also had the opportunity to study my technique for both upper and lower eyelid surgery.  I hope that she will be able to use this knowledge with her patients in the future.

Question:

Will microdermabasion change my freckles and improve my black heads?

Answer:

Microdermabrasion is a terrific medical spa service. Multiple treatments are necessary to acheive results. Freckles should not change significantly from this treatment. Depending upon the depth in the skin, which your skin care professional can evaluate, other treatments may help like fractional laser. Blackheads can be treated with a combination therapy that includes microdermabrasion. Your skin care professional may combines this with other treatments like Aesthera PPX ; glycolic peels; and at home regimen.
