I have a lot of scarring on my face due to a severe case of chicken pox when I was about 3 years old. I have been told that dermabrasion can help remove these scars, is this true?
Dermabrasion is a terrific procedure to help reduce scarring. It is probably best after 8 weeks, but you can see improvements even months or years later. That said, in my office we do not perform dermabrasion but laser skin resurfacing with a carbon dioxide laser. The advantage of laser skin resurfacing over dermabrasion is that the physician can see the exact layers that he is going to on your skin. With traditional dermabrasion, it is like sandpaper going over your skin, where there can be bleeding making it difficult for the doctor to see the exact layer they are going to. We have had great success with laser skin resurfacing for scarring due to chicken pox and/or acne as well.
My sister recently had a chemical peel and her skin was red and dry during the process. Was this due to the peel or a negative reaction?
Without examining your sister it is impossible to state, but the skin can become red after the procedure and does become dry where the top layers flake off. At my office though, we don’t allow your skin to fully dry. We do give you moisturizers and different ointments to use right after the procedure so that the skin should not become very itchy or dry. Your skin will flake, you may or may not see this occur, but as this occurs you are getting regeneration of the deeper layers of the skin.
I am a 57 year old male and I have awful worry lines across my forehead. How do I know if I should get a forehead lift as opposed to a face lift? Do they have the same affect?
There are actually many different options for the worry lines within the forehead itself. Without examining you, it is impossible to say what the best treatment is but a facelift does not affect the forehead in anyway. The facelift is for the lower face. The forehead lift that I use is done endoscopic- that's a small camera through micro-incisions. I use this camera to help see the attachment for the muscles that bring down the brow so I can relax these muscles and then lift the brow. You may find though, that you may do best with Botox which can help to decrease those worry lines as well.
I have read that Botox can be used to cure migraines, is there any truth to that?
Physicians have known for some time, that Botox can be used to treat migraines. Patients who are coming in for either blepharospasm or to treat wrinkles, who also were affected by migraines, have been telling their physicians for years that their migraines were diminished or greatly alleviated after Botox. The FDA recently has approved Botox for migraine usage.
I am interested in transconjunctival blepharoplasty. Is the recovery time for this procedure less than a traditional blepharoplasty?
The advantage of the transconjunctival blepharoplasty is that there is no skin incision. Because of this, no stitches are necessary which avoids a skin scar. I further improve upon the traditional transconjunctival blepharoplasty by not using a scalpel either and use a carbon dioxide laser. The advantage of the laser is it helps to stop bleeding at the same time and because of that there is less swelling and less black and blue discoloration. PLUS, the laser can also be used on the skin to resurface or smooth the skin. In comparison to a traditional blepharoplasty, my patient's claim they are able to get back to their regular activities faster, more due to the use of the laser since there is less swelling and less black and blue discoloration. That said, not everyone heals as quickly and some may take just as much time as with a traditional transconjunctival blepharoplasty.

Dr. Berkowitz is pleased to be the first cosmetic surgeon in the Detroit area to offer Zytase to his patients in order to significantly improve Botox outcomes.
Zytase is a dietary supplement of organic zinc and the enzyme phytase. When taken four days before receiving botulinum toxin injections, Zytase made Botox more effective in 93 percent of patients tested in a recent study at The Methodist Hospital in Houston. Virtually all patients who received the zinc supplement showed increased responsiveness to Botox.
Both the patients and Dr. Berkowitz are very happy that these results indicate that the Botox injections have greater effect and last longer. Potentially, this could mean using less toxin, offering patients financial savings, greater safety, and more consistent results.

While there may still be snow on ground here in Michigan, Spring is just around the corner! If you are interested in finally becoming stubble-free this summer, now is the time to start the process of laser hair removal!
If you are ready to be done with shaving, tweezing, waxing and wonder creams and all the bumps, rashes and discomfort that come with these procedures, laser hair removal may be right for you. At Accents, we use the Syneron DSL laser which uses laser and radio frequency technology to disable hair follicles from growing hair. Since hair grows in cycles, some hair follicles will be in their dormant stage during your initial treatment. Gradually, over several treatments, there is a permanent reduction in the amount of hair in that area. Our laser has the added advantage of treating large areas very quickly!
Each treatment will result in less hair coming back, as well as hair growing progressively lighter in color, finer, and slower-growing with each treatment. It takes more than 1 treatment to affect all the follicles growing in an area. Most people achieve satisfactory clearance after 6-8 treatments, but individual results vary depending on medical and genetic factors. (Lighter colored hair may require more treatments than darker colored hair.)
Treatments are spaced about a month apart, making March the perfect time to begin laser hair removal so that you can be silky smooth this summer!
MARCH PROMOTION: All laser hair removal treatments are "Buy One Area, Get One Area FREE" during March! Take advantage of this great special offer and throw away those razors for good!
