Yesterday, the Today Show featured a story about a movement in Hollywood towards natural beauty. Producers and casting directors are making it clear that they don't want fake looking actresses, but rather prefer a less 'cookie cutter' aesthetic. Some are even branching out to hiring actresses from outside of Los Angeles, and even outside of the US as they search for a distinctive face.
The casting directors interviewed for the segment were quick to point out though that it's okay if you have cosmetic surgery, they just shouldn't be able to tell. The key is that your features must look real, not necessarily be real. The casting directors and executives are quick to point out that they still want the "cream of the crop" so to speak when it comes to beauty. Hollywood hasn't changed their ideal - they're saying you should come by it naturally.
A recent study conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) confirms that women prefer a gradual effect over a sudden change. 89% said they would rather have gradual results that could last as long as two years over immediate results lasting six months.
Natural-looking beauty has ALWAYS been our goal here at Accents Cosmetic Surgery. We want people to ask you if you've just come back from vacation, not if you just came back from the surgeon's office! We use a wide variety of non-invasive techniques. Some procedures, such as Thermage skin tightening, start to increase collagen production over time, so optimal results aren't seen until 3 to 6 months later.
The most important thing is for patients to let us know what they want to achieve, and we can work with them to find the best solution that will leave them with a more youthful — but still natural — beauty.
The debate continues: is aging gracefully just for men?
Just this past week, two of America's most popular television shows revealed some thoughts on cosmetic surgery for men.
On Desperate Housewives, Lynette tries to disuade her husband from undergoing a brow lift and encourages him to age gracefully. Lynette goes so far as to bring a seemingly over-Botoxed co-worker home as a scare tactic. (A result not typically seen when procedures are performed correctly.)
Within days, the ladies of television's The View also pushed this subject in their Hot Topics segments arguing that when men undergo cosmetic surgery that they "go overboard" - with Whoopi Goldberg hammering this point home by highlighting the unattractive results seen on Bruce Jenner and Kenny Rogers. While Joy Behar argues that cosmetic surgery is simply addictive - and though we're used to women looking plastic, we aren't used to men caring about their looks. With Barbara Walters support of Behar's argument, she points out that as a society we are entirely used to women being vain but when men are we're simply uncomfortable.
I perform many procedures for men and find that when done conservatively they look natural and rejuvenated... much the same as when performing surgery or enhancement procedures for women. Most patients do not come to me looking for extreme makeover-like results and are thrilled with their outcomes. I encourage you to look through the before and after photos on my website of male patients.
What do you think about men undergoing cosmetic enhancement procedures?
Over the years, we have been explaining the impact of poor nutrition, hydration, and lifestyle choices to our patients. Many understand that consuming too much alcohol and smoking cigarettes will minimize the results from their favorite cosmetic enhancement procedures. Some even change their habits – whether for vanity’s sake or to protect their investment. But, a new study claims these are the exact factors that most need to be considered… outweighing your mother's wrinkles - or lack there of, as the best predictor of how you'll age.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) study looked at identical twins, suggests that despite genetic make-up, certain environmental factors can add years to a person's perceived age. The results reveal that factors like divorce or the use of antidepressants are the real culprits that can wreak havoc on one's face.
"A person's heritage may initially dictate how they age - but if you introduce certain factors into your life, you will certainly age faster. Likewise, if you avoid those factors you can slow down the hands of time," said ASPS Member Surgeon and study author Bahaman Guyuron, MD, professor and chairman, department of plastic surgery, University Hospitals Case Medical Center. "In this study, we looked at identical twins because they are genetically programmed to age exactly the same, and in doing so we essentially discovered that, when it comes to your face, it is possible to cheat your biological clock."
I find this research to be fascinating. These numerous findings could launch a revolution in how we fight facial aging.

I went to another doctor and I have a lump after a Juvederm Injection. Can this be helped?
I am sorry to learn of the difficulty that you are experiencing. Perlane, Juvederm, Restylane or Elevess are all Hyaluronic Acids (HA). The beauty of them is that they are soft and work well to fill in lines and wrinkles around the face. Side effects from these fillers and dissatisfaction is rare. When these occasions do occur the wonderful thing about this group of fillers is that we can offer Wydase or Hyaluronidase to reduce or dissolve them. As an Ocular Plastic surgeon, in the suburbs of Detroit, I utlize Wydase all of the time as part of my freezing solution for eyelid surgery. Side effects from this substance are rare with the most common being an allergic reaction ( which I personally have never encountered with over 3000 procedures, Knock wood:)) As I cannot see you it is impossible to state if masking the lump with more filler would answer the problem. Your physician should never perform any procedure he/ she is not comfortable with. I would ask you to return to your trusted physician to see if he could consult a colleague who would be happy to work with both of you.
