Maria’s Top 5 Tips for Winter Facial Skin Care
Posted January 27, 2010 9:50 AM in Medical Spa
The cold and snowy weather in Michigan this time of year can bring many delights...ice festivals, snow-covered trails for skiing and snowmobiling, and frozen lakes for skating or ice fishing. Unfortunately, one down side to this weather is the harsh effects it has on our skin. Our aesthetician Maria has tips for how to protect your skin, while continuing to enjoy Michigan's winter wonderland!
1.
Cleanse with appropriate type of
cleanser. Your skin changes in the winter and so should your
products! Your skin acts differently from summer to winter and
the best strategy for healthy, problem-free skin is to adjust your home care
routine to suit your skin’s needs each season. In winter, the skin produces
less oil and is often dehydrated, so for many skin types, oil must be added
back into the skin to maintain its balance. The wrong cleanser can worsen itchy, dry skin. Also, avoid hot water when cleansing your face as it
will further strip your skin of natural oils and moisture.
2. Exfoliate. When the heat is on in the house
and the air is cold outside, your skin will be depleted of its natural
moisture, leaving your skin feeling tight and dry. This is a sign that you have dry skin cell build-up on the
surface of the skin. Regular exfoliation (2-3x per week) with a gentle facial
scrub helps remove the dry skin cells so that when your moisturizer goes on, it
hydrates new cells rather than the old, dry cells.
3. Use Serums. Every skin type can benefit from a
fast-penetrating and hydrating serum with antioxidants. Some serums include Vitamin C, which is a potent
antioxidant that travels to the deepest layers of the epidermis
and repairs damaged or mutated cells. Serums containing Retinol are also
great for repairing fine lines and sun damage and fighting wrinkles. Apply
serums before moisturizers.
4.
Use SPF daily. Skin
needs to be protected from the sun, even in the winter because damaging sun
rays still affect you, even on those cold, dreary winter days. Sun rays can be
even more potent and damaging when reflecting off snow! Before
going outside, apply a moisturizing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15
or higher to all exposed areas of your body. Sun exposure can
damage the skin and cause wrinkles.
5.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
Everyone needs to hydrate their skin regularly. As we age, we continue to lose
moisture. Make sure to use a product that matches your skin type, whether it is
dry, oily, combination or sensitive. Oil-based moisturizers tend to lock in
moisture more than water-based ones, making them a better choice in winter
months.

Detroit Cosmetic Surgeon Comments on Usher's Wifes Brazilian Surgery
Posted February 10, 2009 2:52 PM in Medical Spa
Why do people continue to travel to foreign countries for elective surgery? Less expensive? Not in the long run, especially if you have a complication! It appears that Usher's wife went to Brazil for an elective procedure. What could they possibly perform in Brazil that we do not have talented enough surgeons performing in the United States? Butt Lift? Breast Implants? Money is certainly not the issue. Vacations and surgery do not go hand in hand. Go to Brazil to play on the beach. (Although we have some beautiful beaches here in the USA) Her unkown surgery will come out so I wonder what they are trying to hide.
